Joint CT Scan

When the doctor refers you for a CT scan of the joints, he will also determine the joint that needs to be scanned. The Pulse Cardiology Center performs an MSCT scan for the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee or ankle.

CT scan of the joint in relation to the X-ray of the joint

Although conventional X-rays can capture bone structure, they do not show soft tissues clearly enough. Joints are complex structures composed of soft tissue and bones that help the body move. Therefore, the most advanced form of recording is required. MSCT scanning is the preferred method of imaging the joints, because it clearly captures very detailed images of the bone structure.

Reasons for MSCT joint scanning

Your doctor or surgeon may require a CT scan of your joints to help plan further surgery or therapy. The recordings can also be used to assess how your body responds to a particular therapy.

Your doctor may also require a CT of your joints to:

  • found fractures that are difficult to detect with ordinary X-rays
  • assessed fracture healing
  • assessed degenerative changes and checked for loose bodies in the joints
  • check for abnormal tumors, growths or nodules

Lower and upper joints

There are two main groups of joints, upper and lower, classified according to their position in the body, and based on them, there is a scan of each joint.

In the lower joints we distinguish:

Ankle – CT of the ankle

Knee – CT of the knee

Hip – CT of the hip

With the upper joints we distinguish:

Wrist – CT of the wrist

Elbow – CT of the elbow

Shoulder – CT of the shoulder

During an MSCT joint scan, your body position and orientation will depend on whether your upper or lower joint is being scanned.

Duration of MSCT joint scan

An average scan of the joints takes about 30 minutes.
