Pediatric Cardiology

If pediatrician has any concerns about your child’s heart function, he or she may refer your child to a pediatric cardiologist. Pediatric cardiologists are specialists in diagnosing and treating heart problems in children. In children who may need heart intervention, pediatric cardiologists work closely with pediatric cardiac surgeons to determine the best treatment options.

Heart examination in children

Numerous heart disorders can affect children. Sometimes it is a question of structural differences with which children are born. Other disorders include the electrical system that controls the heart. Pediatric cardiologists are specially trained to diagnose and solve such problems. If you suspect that your chid have cardiac problems, talk to your pediatrician about whether a referral to a pediatric cardiologist is necessary.

Pediatric cardiology is a subspecialist branch of pediatrics that deals with the functional examination of a healthy heart (functional or physiological murmur) and diseases of the cardiovascular system (heart and blood vessels) in children (congenital heart defects, myocarditis…).

How old are children treated by a pediatric cardiologist

The Department of Pediatric Cardiology treats children from birth to 18 years of age with congenital and acquired anomalies and heart diseases and heart rhythm disorders.

In addition, pregnant women are treated for suspected fetal health (fetal medicine).

The Department of Pediatric Cardiology of the Pulse Cardiology Center has its own outpatient-diagnostic part and observation where children and pregnant women who need treatment and monitoring of the therapy effect can be treated in our center.

Cardiac problems present in children

If the child has any of the following problems, there may be a need to see a pediatric cardiologist:

  • chest pain (tightness, pressure)
  • feeling of palpitations, skipping of the heart, irregular heartbeat, pauses in the heartbeat
  • choking, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath
  • weakness, fainting, dizziness
  • swelling of the lower legs

How long does it take and what does a pediatric cardiologist’s examination cover?

The examination by a pediatric cardiologist lasts 20-30 minutes, and longer if necessary. The examination is completely painless and does not require special preparation.

The problem-based review includes:

  • anamnesis – conversation with child and parents about the problems
  • inspection of previous medical documentation (if any)
  • physical examination (inspection, auscultation, tension measurement and ECG recording if necessary)
  • echocardiographic examination (heart ultrasound)
  • advice and recommendation for further treatment (if necessary)
  • proposal on possible additional diagnostics (ergometry – load test, ECG holter, blood pressure holter)
  • fetal echocardiography

The gold standard for heart diagnostics in children is ultrasound examination, which is performed on the most modern devices that have the possibility of applying all modern ultrasound methods.

Starting from the clinical cardiac examination and ECG, ergometry – stress test, patients have the option of 24-hour holter monitoring, both ECG and blood pressure, to the application of all non-invasive diagnostic procedures. At the Pulse Cardiology Center, you can perform all examinations and diagnostics in one place.

In addition, examinations of contrast and transesophageal echocardiography are performed. Fetal echocardiography has been specially developed in order to examine the structure and function of the fetal heart.

Examinations are performed by Professor Dr. Jovan Košutić with the constant presence of professional medical staff and doctors.

The Pulse Cardiology Center also performs CT scan examinations for both congenital and acquired heart diseases. Such an examination is performed on a 128 multislice scanner – Philips incisive. Modern diagnostics show the structure and function of the heart down to the finest details.

In our cardiology center, we provide medical treatment of all diseases that require treatment. In case of the need for a surgical or interventional catheterization procedure, the patients are referred to interventional cardiology unit or to cardio-surgeons for all consultations.

Procedures and interventions that we perform at the Pulse Cardiology Center

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Ultrasound examination of the heart – ECHO
  • CT scan of the heart / aorta / coronary angiography
  • Ergometry – stress test
  • Holter ECG
  • BP Holter (blood pressure)
  • Diagnostic and therapeutic catheterization
